Tory chairman shows how to not quash general election speculation
Bungling Brandon Lewis is not exactly winning over Conservative MPs.
The Conservative party has pencilled in a general election for June 6 in a bid to “cement Theresa May in power”, the Mail on Sunday reported this weekend.
But many Tory MPs - including Boris Johnson in The Telegraph - are not exactly champing at the bit to go to the voters just yet.
Could party chairman Brandon Lewis set their mind at rest? Not quite, according to a cache of amusing messages leaked from a Tory MP WhatsApp group.
The various messages seen by Buzzfeed show that Nicholas Soames blasted “amateur night” at Tory HQ and Scott Mann was displeased that “someone briefed this out”. And many angry MPs repeatedly called on the chairman to rule out a June general election.
As tensions boiled over, Lewis eventually popped up to try and reassure the troops. Alas he could only tell them that Tory HQ was not considering travelling back in time to host another election.
Or as he put it: "We are NOT looking for a 2018 GE".
