Man nobody has ever heard of is the new leader of Ukip
Henry Bolton is a former soldier who served in Germany, Belize, Cyprus and Bosnia
Political journalists were left scratching their heads today as a former soldier backed by Nigel Farage was elected Ukip leader.
Henry Bolton saw off a challenge from anti-Islam campaigner Anne Marie Waters to win with 30% of the vote.
Speaking at the UKIP conference in Torquay, he said: "Brexit is our core task however, it is not the end of the line."
In a recent YouTube campaign film, he complained that "we have gone down the road of mediocracy and compromise, we don’t like the idea of excelling of anything because we worry that it implies that somebody is less good".
Bolton is a former soldier and tank crew member, who served in Germany, Belize, Cyprus and Bosnia and was awarded an OBE for services to international security and stabilisation
He later became an officer with Thames Valley Police and stood for UKIP as police and crime commissioner in Kent in 2016, coming second.
Senior political journalists had never heard of him before 3.50pm today.
