Jeremy Paxman hits May with brutal Brexit ‘blowhard’ jibe
The veteran newsman saved his best attack line for the prime minister.
Theresa May was left licking her wounds after Jeremy Paxman called her a “blowhard who collapses at the first sign of gunfire” during their live TV clash.
The prime minister followed Jeremy Corbyn on the Channel 4 News / Sky News ‘Battle for Number 10’ programme and was challenged by members of the public on reductions to police numbers, the Conservative plans for social care, and cuts to school funding.
May dealt relatively easily with the audience questions but had a far tougher time when Paxman was let off the leash.
Pressed by the presenter on what the social cap would be, she replied: "It’s not about not knowing Jeremy….it’s about thinking what the right approach is."
As Paxman looked unimpressed, some audience members simply laughed at the prime minister’s response.
The veteran newsman also took the prime minister to task over her u-turns on National Insurance rises and an early election.
And then he delivered the coup de grâce:
“What one's bound to say and if I was sitting in Brussels and I was looking at you as the person I had to negotiate with, I'd think: she's a blowhard who collapses at the first sign of gunfire.”
May looked mildly shellshocked as the comment was applauded by the audience.
She then responded: "I think you’ll find that what the people in Brussels look at is the record that I have of negotiating with them… on justice and home affairs, which people said we were never going to get and I got those [in the] negotiations."
