In your final sentence you mention "power on loan from the people". Are these the same powers that your party seem hell-bent on giving to Brussels without the "peoples'" permission via referendum? I also assume you include yourself and your party colleagues as "those of us who believe in the powerful potential of the democratic system". Why not show your belief by giving us all the aforementioned referendum?

I think the arguments have been well-rehearsed, but for the record a treaty doesn't require a referendum whilst a constitution would.

"a treaty doesn't require a referendum whilst a constitution would."

How very convenient! A change of name (but very little change of content, though that was well-camouflaged) gives the gov't a handy get-out. Fortunately the Irish saw through this and held their referendum anyway, with the result we all know.

If there had been any doubt (and of course there was plenty) any decent government would have provided the referendum anyway, in pursuance of its stated aim to represent the people. This was and is too big an issue to be dismissed on some manufactured technicality. We are owed the referendum that is our right.

That's the bottom line; and no degree of wriggling will negate that.

'Invicta' you need to go and lie down in a dark room for a while. You do a good impression of someone a little too obsessed for your own good. Why not start your own string about referendums rather than twist this one?
There seems to me to be a great deal to be chearful about in this statement regardless of your Party affiliation. As a former councillor I applaud the move to embrace party politics rather than regard it as unclean. Democracy is not possible without political parties and if the White Paper recognises this and helps to foster their development that is a move forward in my book.
Maybe after breathing into a paper bag for a few minutes even 'Invicta' might agree.

South City Radio Helps To Launch Government White Paper

This morning, at 10.30am, Hazel Blears, MP and Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, launched her community White Paper, Real People, Real Power, live on air at South City Radio - www.southcityradio.org

Speaking live from the station today, Hazel Blears MP said “I’m a champion of community radio… it provides a space where people can say some quite difficult things.” Of South City radio station she said, “It’s brilliant.”

The South City community radio project began as Radio Peckham, and has been running for five years and is one of London’s leading community radio stations. Run by media specialists Eclectic Productions, members of the community are able to produce and present their own radio programmes through media training and outreach courses.

Blears’ white paper focuses on community empowerment, a key goal of the South City Radio project. The white paper looks at ways to benefit communities by increasing active citizens, tackling unemployment, strengthening local leadership and improving public services.

Eclectic Productions and the South City Radio project play a key role in empowering communities and encouraging active citizens. By teaching core skill sets to individuals, South City Radio is a service positively benefiting communities and is an effective way to create an active forum between policy makers, decision makers and the residents they serve.

Hazel Blears MP was joined at South City Radio by Area Coordinator for Peckham Programme, Adrian Newman and South Area Youth and Environment Manager, Groundwork London, Catherine Arnell.

The show was presented by youth radio presenter Michael Stickland who was joined on the panel by South City Radio volunteers Cleopatra Kabakidi, Ben Bethell, and Sean Benson.
