David Cameron signs up with literary agent to the stars

Ed Victor says former PM will ‘write a wonderful memoir’.

With a client list that includes Eric Clapton, Nigella Lawson and U2, Ed Victor is one of the most sought-after literary agents in the world.

The charismatic Bronx-born agent has also secured lucrative deals for Alastair Campbell and David Blunkett.

And now David Cameron has bagged the services of the 77-year-old as he settles down to write his memoirs, according to The Times [1].

“He’s going to write a wonderful memoir and get a great deal but that’s all I’m going to say,” said Victor. “I’ve been characteristically discreet.”

Cameron is said be focusing all of his energies on the task of writing his memoirs in the coming months, as he hopes to beat Tony Blair’s £4.6 million advance (Blair engaged top US lawyer Robert Barnett).

Given that Blair’s whopping advance was based on the prospect of considerable US sales, the former Tory leader might struggle to be in the same league as Blair. But if anyone can get close then it is surely Victor, who sold Douglas Adams’ Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy series throughout the 1980s.

The veteran agent later made an instant bestseller out of Nigella Lawson’s first cookbook, selling over 300,000 copies of How to Eat in 1998.

Three years before Blair’s book emerged in 2010, he sold Eric Clapton’s memoirs for a reported $4m (£2.7m).

Victor is said to be a ubiquitous presence at literary, fashion, film and society soirees.

During a Hay festival appearance, one member of the audience asked Victor: “How do I get my manuscript to you if I don't go to that kind of party?”

He reportedly [2] replied: “You don’t.”
