Turns out that the Labour MP for Leyton and Wanstead has a bit of a star-studded past

Little-known fact about Labour MP John Cryer: he appeared as a child extra in the film The Railway Children.

Cryer has said of the 1970 film classic: “I was only an extra and I cannot take any credit in the film becoming a worldwide timeless success... I don’t think the film fraternity were surprised that my film career was limited and I am not sure I was ever in line to become a film star.”

John and his sister became involved in the film because their father, Bob, helped to form the KWVR Preservation Society, which bought the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway from British Rail.

Bob, a former Labour MP, became the society's first chairman and later helped make it possible for the film to shoot on the railway line.

Cryer was reunited with the film's star Jenny Agutter at a Commons reception late last year.
