Labour leadership front-runner Andy Burnham has strengthened his campaign team with two senior hires from the lobbying world.

TP has learned that the shadow health secretary has brought in John Lehal, founder of Insight Consulting Group, to run his campaign.

Lehal is a highly-regarded public affairs consultant who set up his agency in 2006, having previously worked at top lobbying firms Westminster Strategy and Edelman. He also stood as a Labour parliamentary candidate in 1997 at the age of 24. He takes the title of campaign director.

Burnham has also signed up his former special adviser Katy Myler as director of communications.

Myler managed Ed Miliband’s successful leadership campaign in 2010 before taking a senior post at the global PR and lobbying consultancy Burson Marsteller where she has been stationed for the last five years.

On the parliamentary side, the Burnham campaign chair is shadow transport secretary Michael Dugher.
