Owen Smith gets set to leave Labour - along with 'lots of other people'
Watch: Smith cofirmed he could quit when he spoke on Radio 5Live.
When Labour insiders discuss the increasingly realistic prospect of MPs leaving the party, at least seven parliamentarians are said to be in the departure lounge. They are: Owen Smith, Chuka Umunna, Chris Leslie, Luciana Berger, Gavin Shuker, Angela Smith and Mike Gapes.
So far, none of the seven have been keen to speak publicly about walking out on Labour. But has Jeremy Corbyn just changed all of that by offering to back Theresa May on a Brexit deal?
On Radio5Live, Smith was asked by host Emma Barnett if he was still going to stick around. His answer was definitely not a yes…
Barnett: “Can you in all good conscience remain a member of the Labour party?”
Smith: “I think it’s something that I and lots of other people are considering right now.”
But he then confused matters by arguing that Labour Remainers should not leave this second. Rather they should “stay and fight in Labour until Brexit”.
You could call it the One More Heave strategy…
