Déjà vu all over again in Westminster as Theresa May takes to stage

Another drinks party, another guest speaker takes a swipe at Michael Gove....

It was déjà vu all over again in more ways than one as the prime minister spoke at the annual Policy Exchange summer party on College Green.

As the set started collapsing behind her in the breeze, Theresa May was determined to take it in her stride.

"There aren’t any letters falling down behind me are there?" she asked with a nervous smile as PX staffers desperately tried to hold up the hoardings from behind.

"Oh it’s the whole set..."

But at least the prime minister was not stopped from taking the wind out of the sails of a certain cabinet colleague. May told the crowd:

"Those of you here this evening who are regulars of the summer party circuit will have realised by now that this is something of a collector’s event: it is a centre right think tank reception of which Michael Gove is not the guest speaker."

Now where could the Number 10 gag writers have got that idea from?

By pure coincidence, when lobbying firm WPI Strategy threw a party at the Mall Galleries earlier this year, the guest speaker also got a few laughs with a cheeky potshot at the environment secretary.

Addressing the amassed Conservative MPs and Number 10 operators, Sunday Times political editor Tim Shipman called it "the only drinks do in Westminster at which Michael Gove is not speaking in the next month".
