Czech President Vaclav Klaus wants a new exemption for the Czech Republic with regards the Lisbon Treaty’s Charter of Fundamental Rights. Could this delay the ratification process and provide a window of oppurtunity for Cameron’s Tories to hold a referendum if they win power? This is unlikely to be the case. Even if Klaus delays the process until after our General Election in May next year, sorting out the logistics of a British referendum could take months. There’s little chance that by the time a British referendum was held, the Czech would still not have signed. Klaus himself has said that British opposition to this treaty has come “too late”. All of this makes the question of what Cameron will do in a post-ratification world all the more important.
