The SNP's Hannah Bardell goes football crazy in the Commons
The MP for Livingston flouted Commons dress rules to show her support for Scotland ahead of big match tonight
SNP MP Hannah Bardell has risked the wrath of Commons speaker John Bercow by appearing to ignore dress rules for MPs. She wore a Scotland football top while sitting on the green benches throughout Prime Minister's Questions.
Last month Bercow relaxed the dress code for MPs by allowing men to ditch their ties as long as they turned up in "businesslike attire". Bardell's get up would only pass that test if her business was football.
Initially Bardell, her party's trade and investment spokeswoman, kept her strip secret, covering up with a cardigan until she got up to make an intervention at Scottish questions at which point she revealed her attire. But by Prime Minister's Questions she'd taken off the cardigan.
She was wearing the strip having taken part in a charity sports day event earlier in the morning where she showed off her ball juggling skills. And she kept it on to show her support for the Scotland football team taking on England tonight at the women's European championship. She revealed that she used to play football alongside two of the internationals who'll be turning out in dark blue tonight.
