Tory candidate in hot water for Costa Coffee attack on voter
Antony Calvert likes to drink coffee at luxury London hotels.
A Conservative parliamentary candidate has been accused of “sneering” at voters – after he ridiculed a man for visiting Costa Coffee while claiming to be working class.
Public affairs boss Anthony Calvert was confirmed as the Tory candidate for Wakefield at the general election last week. He is one of a number of lobbyists to have been given the nod to fight the election for the Tories.
But he is now being taken to task for a tweet written a few days before Theresa May called the general election.
"Man recognises me at Wakefield Westgate. 'These f*ckin Tories, always looking to trample on t'working class, like me'. Man walks into Costa," he stated.
Mary Creagh, Labour MP for Wakefield, seized on the comment last night, telling her followers: “This sneering tweet sums up why Wakefield Tory candidate don't deserve your vote.”
Other social media users have also piled with one asking: "Is Costa reserved only for middle class people, then?"
And some lampooned Calvert for his stereotypical view of northern working class people. One user replied: "The lower middle class are allowed instant coffee, the poor get to drink from rivers and puddles."
Elsewhere on his Twitter feed, Calvert has praised "the first class service" he received when he enjoyed a coffee at The Goring. The service at the luxury London hotel was better than at rival establishment The Grosvenor, he suggested.
He has also railed against busking on the London underground.
