The Labour MP for Cardiff West lets us in on his music tastes

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars by David Bowie.  I still remember the crackle of the needle on the vinyl as the drumbeat of the first track Five Years opens the album.  I was 13 – it changed my life and my haircut.

The first record I bought

It was the first Led Zeppelin album which I bought second hand for a pound because I liked the cover. What was on the record was even better.

My favourite record

At the moment, song: I Put a Spell on You by Nina Simone – brilliant and scary – and album: Songs for Beginners by Graham Nash which contains the first songs I learnt to play on guitar and piano.

What I play if I’ve had a bad day

The Mariner’s Revenge Song by The Decemberists – nothing like a tale of two sailors trapped in the belly of a whale to cheer you up.

The most political record I own

Apart from Cross Party by MP4, then Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On – it’s highly political but also cool.

The most recent record bought or downloaded

I like to buy from Spillers Record Store in Cardiff, which is one of the oldest in the world. I just bought Week of Pines by Georgia Ruth, a new harpist/vocalist.
