Directed by Madonna and starring Abbie Cornish, James D’Arcy and Andrea Riseborough

Madonna has directed two films. The first, Filth and Wisdom (2008), came and went with little more than a few disparaging reviews to record its passing.
The second, W.E., is released this month and shows more promise. W.E. is a Wallace Simpson biopic that shuns a conventional narrative; the story of Simpson’s epochal affair with King Edward is told in tandem with the story of a 90s Manhattan-ite and Simpson devotee.

Depictions of the Duchess in British popular culture are rarely sympathetic. Generally when Simpson appears on our screens, most recently in The King’s Speech, we see a conniving Nazi-sympathiser and temptress. Madonna has chosen to change tack.

Released in cinemas on 20 January
