The Total Politics internship programme is built around one very simple idea: giving interns a truly valuable experience that will equip them with the knowledge, experience and skills they need to succeed in the field of political journalism.
Our objective is not to provide the standard intern experience (filing, photocopying and tea-making), but to ensure that each intern leaves with a set of marketable skills and the confidence to succeed as a journalist.
Internships are heavily structured to ensure that an intern is exposed to every aspect of Total Politics including the website, events, day-to-day running and the magazine itself. Most importantly, the internship programme places an emphasis on constructive feedback, with interns attending a weekly seminar with staff. These seminars will provide basic journalism training and will allow the intern to raise any ideas or feedback they may have. We want TP interns get the most from their time with us.
An internship will last approximately one to three months, subject to review.
We are currently advertising for an intern to join us at the beginning of January.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, articulate, have an interest in British politics, a desire to develop a career in journalism, strong interpersonal skills and work well as part of a team. Previous experience and knowledge of journalism is preferable. Candidates with good knowledge and awareness of British politics is also favoured.
Applicants should be available for interview before 17 December, and will be available to start at the beginning of January.
Send a CV, a brief covering letter and five ideas for improving the magazine and website to caroline.crampton@totalpolitics.com.
The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 9 December 2011.
