A 20,000-name petition has been presented to Leicester City Council, objecting to plans for a Sunday market at the Walkers Stadium. Traders at Leicester’s 700-year-old city centre market fear that they will lose custom. Dawn Alfonso, vice-chairman of Leicester Market Traders' Federation and manager of Dawn and Gary's Lingerie stall, said: "The council is gambling with our livelihood with this market and it tried to introduce this without going through the correct and proper channels.”
A meeting this Monday between Binfield Parish Council and the Allotment Regeneration Initiative will determine whether additional land in the village might be converted into allotments. The waiting list for land has increased dramatically recently, in-keeping with a revived national interest in ‘growing your own’. Clerk Amanda Sculley said: “The waiting list is getting longer and longer and we now split our plots into two.”
Wigginton Parish councillors have expressed strong opposition to plans for an outdoor adventure centre, to be situated on the outskirts of York. Opponents say the initiative, tabled by Aerial Extreme which argues the centre could attract 20,000 visitors a year, would contribute to traffic congestion, and be an unwelcome blemish on the green belt.
