The women of Afghanistan have come a long way in the past 8 years from the unjust laws put in place by the Taliban government, but all of these achievements will soon be reversed as President Hamid Karazai legalises rape within marriage. The Shiite community will be the only ones affected by this horrific law which strips a woman of her right to refuse sexual intercourse with her husband. The words ‘legalizing marital rape’ should be illegal to say in any country, which is why it is the role of human and women’s rights organizations to intervene and stop this law from being passed, before these women forget the meaning of ‘freedom.’
