I don’t know if Gordon Brown would agree with Benjamin Franklin who declared that ‘Diligence is the mother of good luck’. My ‘quote of the day’ is this spirited line from a great American.
I believe that good luck comes from nowhere and from nothing. That’s the beauty of it, and simultaneously, the bother of it. No matter how little or hard one works, good luck can strike at anytime to anyone.
It would be a shame to confuse the fruits of labour with good luck. If you’ve worked hard, be proud of your achievement and good things will usually come your way. For Gordon Brown though, even while twittering to express his love of the NHS, it seems that good luck has not fallen upon him like Franklin promised. Perhaps Labour should be enjoying the recess rather than appointing Twitter ‘tsars’ like Kerry McCarthy – there is such a thing as trying too hard.
As a rule I’d say always hope for one of life’s little surprises, but never expect it.
