Labour's London mayoral fight starts to get dirty

Labour's London mayoral fight starts to get dirty

22 May 2015 16:17

Labour’s leadership battle has so far been a courteous affair, with the candidates playing nicely. In public at least.

At Thursday’s press gallery lunch, Liz Kendall politely declined an invitation to say where her rivals needed to up their game. Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper, Mary Creagh and their teams have also been generally well-behaved so far.

The same cannot be said for some of those featuring in the battle to be the party’s mayoral

Noises from Ed Miliband and Neil Kinnock... and the role of Larry the No 10 cat in the election

22 May 2015 08:39

Will Ed Miliband will be weighing into the Labour leadership election or staying well out of it?

It was reported last night that Ed is urging Labour to ignore calls from figures such as Peter Mandelson urging the party to turn rightwards.

The former Labour leader is said to have pointed to analysis by pollsters Ipsos MORI stating that 2.9m 'lazy Labour' supporters failed to make good on their intentions to turn out to vote.

Liz Kendall strikes out on defence and free schools at press gallery lunch

21 May 2015 15:17

Liz Kendall has spoken to lobby journalists about defence spending, free schools, Labour's future and the prospect of being endorsed by Tony Blair.

The Labour leadership contender was the guest of the parliamentary press gallery over lunch today in the Palace of Westminster.

Addressing the hacks, she kicked off with a joke at the former shadow chancellor’s expense.

“Most people thought we'd lost our balls before the election.”

She went on to savage Ed Miliband’s

Boris Johnson warns of right to buy 'de-jumblification'. But will he stand up to George Osborne?

21 May 2015 12:01

Boris Johnson has expressed concern that the Tory plan to extend the right to buy to housing associations could lead to ethnic or social cleansing - or as he put it the “de-jumblification” of London.

The mayor of London made it clear he was yet to be convinced by the policy when he was grilled today by the Greater London Assembly.

Boris suggested there was still much scope for lobbying to shape the plans.

“This policy

Guardian calls for Alan Johnson as interim Labour leader

21 May 2015 07:56

The Guardian has urged Labour to appoint an interim leader and said that Alan Johnson would be “perfect” for the role.

In a withering leader column, the paper criticises the “inward-looking leadership contest” that the party is undergoing.

It says the threshold of 35 MPs that a candidate needs to stand is too high and laments that the contest is being decided prematurely. It adds:

“Labour should put its thinking head on before it

Theresa May v the police

Theresa May v the police

20 May 2015 15:08

Theresa May today faced the wrath of police officers as she told them to stop “crying wolf” over budget cuts.

The Home Secretary delivered a speech to the Police Federation’s annual conference which was met with a stony silence throughout.

She said more savings would have to be made in the next five years and accused leaders of the body of "scaremongering" over the effect of cuts while crime was falling.

"I have to tell

SNP 'willing to compromise' in Commons seats war

20 May 2015 14:30

Could peace be about to break out in the Commons turf war between Labour and the SNP?

This week, SNP MPs have been trying to occupy the block of front bench seats on the right hand side of the chamber, to underline their status as the third biggest party.

But that includes the bench usually taken by Labour veteran Dennis Skinner who has made it clear he is going nowhere.

After Labour MPs refused to

Tristram Hunt backs Liz Kendall for Labour leader. Eventually...

20 May 2015 10:59

Tristram Hunt has backed Liz Kendall to be leader of the Labour party after failing to get enough support to stand himself.

In a speech today, the shadow education secretary made it clear that he did not want to split the Blairite vote in the parliamentary party. Sounding a little frustrated that he was unable to sign up the necessary 35 MPs, Hunt said:

“This morning I am announcing that I will not be entering the race to

The Kipfather: Nigel Farage to make Suzanne Evans an offer she can’t refuse

20 May 2015 09:00

Nigel Farage has imposed his authority on Ukip after the news that Suzanne Evans and Patrick O’Flynn have been killed off as the party’s policy chief and economic spokesman.

After recent fighting between senior figures, the Ukip leader insisted the open warfare was over and that the party was united behind him.

As he appeared on the Today programme this morning, Farage also seemed to suggest that there was little scope for others to nurture
