Big Ben struck ten. Photographers swarmed. The rain poured. Sorry, pawed. Sopping and suited, excitable politicians chased their prize pooches around Victoria Tower Gardens. And frantic assistants chased their politicians around in turn, quietly noting the advantages a lead has to offer.
This morning was Westminster Dog of the Year’s 20th anniversary – and the scene of parliament’s most bitterly contested battle.

Many describe politics as a dog-eat-dog world, but it rarely gets more canine than this. The Westminster Dog of the Year competition, organised by the Dogs Trust and the Kennel Club, will take place on 25 October in Victoria Tower Gardens, just a bone’s throw away from the Houses of Parliament. Approaching its 20th anniversary, it is somewhat of an institution for MPs wishing to raise their pup-ularity ratings…and for headline writers nationwide.

It’s the result you’ve undoubtedly been dying to know. This morning, SW1 played host to 18 special guests of the canine variety, who all descended on Victoria Tower Gardens for the nineteenth annual Westminster Dog of the Year competition.
Needless to say, the competition was taken very seriously by all involved, to the extent that, when Therese Coffey, the MP for Suffolk Coastal, called on her mother to give a character reference for
