Neither Clegg nor Cameron can afford to back down on human rights

In the mighty coalition struggle there are some issues that neither partner is prepared to back down on without a fight. Human rights are fast becoming one of them. The Liberal Democrats continue to defend the Human Rights Act, whilst the Conservatives continuously pledge to get rid of it.

Last week the Ministry of Justice announced the formation of a Commission to investigate the case for a UK Bill of Rights, to ‘ensure that our rights, freedoms and liberties are protected in a way that properly reflects our traditions’.
