Sky News has broken the news that News Corp has withdrawn its bid for the remainder of BSkyB, but will remain a shareholder in the company.
Early reports suggest that the opposition day debate on the merger will go ahead as planned. Not clear yet whether motion will be amended/changed in light of recent developments.

BBC reports that emails have been given to authorities which suggest the News of the World bought contact details of high ranking members of the Royal family from a royal protection officer.
Ed Miliband calls for the public inquiry to start immediately and for the BSKYB bid to be withdrawn. Nick Clegg says he think the BSKYB bid should be withdrawn not temporarily but for good.

Lords debate impact of phone hacking on BSkyB bid

As new revelations on alleged phone hacking at News of the World continue to surface, Labour’s Baroness Royall has put forward a private notice question in the House of Lords this morning, asking the government if:
“In the light of the loss of public and commercial confidence in News International and the imminent closure of the consultation period... they will suspend consideration of News Corporation’s bid to takeover BSkyB.”
