It's normally backbenchers who suck up to ministers, not the other way around.

But one Foreign Office official showed recently that diplomacy works both ways.

A female Conservative MP was surprised to receive a thank you letter in the internal post from one particularly well-mannered FCO minister.

The reason for the letter? The MP had asked a question in a Commons Foreign Office debate.

(I'm guessing it wasn't a particularly negative query...)

The politest minister in government? It's certainly up there.

Well, that or they have a lot of time on their hands.
