John Cryer has put his name down to stand as chair of the PLP – and here's his letter appealing for support from Labour MPs.
The position became available after Tony Lloyd announced he was standing down to campaign for a role as an elected police commissioner.
The Labour MP for Leyton and Wanstead stresses that he is a "unifying force" who would take on "government gerrymandering" and the "IPSA mess".
He is the first Labour MP to go public with his desire to take up the post, although others are expected to follow.

John Cryer is the ideal choice for PLP Chair. He has an history of assertive and independent thinking, and will stand up strongly for backbenchers in dealings with the leadership. He is nevertheless a unifyer with good relationships across the spectrum of political direction within the Party.

Nice to see John Cryer going for PLP chair. Although I do not have a vote I would urge all Labour MPs to support John Cryer as he would be excellent in the role. The PLP need a strong chair and John Cryer will certainly be that and more
