The Treasury celebrated a host of positive headlines after bumper 2011 Christmas sales, with government borrowing costs tumbling to a record low and British firms making their biggest profits since before banking crash in 2008.

And it seems that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) was contributing to some of this generous Christmas spirit.

Defra spent £2,011 "on Christmas trees (including decorations)" in 2011, according to a parliamentary answer from minister Richard Benyon.
