Shadow leader of the House Angela Eagle is the latest Labour MP to criticise Unite boss Len McCluskey for his intervention in The Guardian this week.

Speaking as part of a wider interview (which I'll publish tomorrow) Eagle said: "What the two Eds did this week was important. And the response from the trade unions was a bit too knee-jerk, if I can put it that way…

"Everybody is entitled to their view, which is fine. But I am not sure megaphone diplomacy is exactly the most helpful."

Eagle describes herself as "a trade unionist and proud" – before entering Parliament, she worked for the Confederation of Health Service Employees.

Earlier this week, Alan Johnson also wrote for The Guardian stating that the unions are at risk of becoming "the delusional left".

He added: "Len McCluskey's article reminded me of the 'culture of betrayal' that I thought the movement had escaped."

The trade union general secretary used his article to describe Labour's endorsement of the public sector pay freeze as a "victory for discredited Blairism".

Labour leader Ed Miliband dismissed McCluskey's suggestion as "wrong".
