Ed Miliband is right in one sense: the Conservatives probably won’t cut the nation’s carbon emissions. But then if the developed nations’ responses to Kyoto are any guide, no one will. The kinds of cuts that we are constantly told are needed to “save the planet” will be harsh and unpopular. They would involve much higher taxes on most forms of energy — with obvious implications for transport and domestic and commercial heating bills.

Perhaps our leaders should set an example. It’s an unoriginal suggestion, but instead of flying to Copenhagen, why don’t they just have a massive conference call? Lead by example: stay at home and talk over the internet. Businesses do it all the time. Granted, they'll be a few more people at this than your average Best Western gig, but isn't saving the planet important?
