Something bizarre seems to have turned into a media obsession over the last few days. Allegations against Peter Mandelson, a figure who seems universally hated by the media, turned into a disaster for the Conservatives. How, the man at the centre of the introductions of UK politicians to Russian metal magnate Oleg Deripaska, Nathaniel Rothschild complained about The Times implying Mandelson was doing any wrong by implicating his old school friend and Bullingdon club peer George Osborne. In fact his letter exonerates Mandelson and places all guilt on the doorstep of Osborne. The bizarre aspect of this is that Rothschild was Osborne's friend and host previously, it seems that now he and his friends are willing to testify to the fact that Osborne asked Deripaska for money and so ruin his career. This all makes me ask one question, what did Osborne do to annoy Rothschild. I cannot believe that anyone would sacrifice one friend (Mandelson) but forsake another (Osborne) unless there was a personal or strategic reason for doing so. For George Osborne, perhaps he needs to consider why this information has been made public and address that aspect of it rather than simply rebutting the allegations and it turning into a 'he said/he says' battle.
