When I said I would blog for Total Politics I agreed two posts a week, I failed on this last week as we are heading into silly season.

Today I attended the East of England Regional Assembly's Social Inclusion Panel. As it is silly season we were actually low on numbers but we had a useful meeting. Items on the agenda varied from Health to Migration. It was a meeting that shows the good a regional assembly can do by everyone working together. In this regions case is politically balanced membership and community stakeholders.

In the East of England the future of regional working is unclear, there seems to be a bid from the upper tier authorities to create an elite group of council leaders to discuss regional matters rather than the slightly more democratic solution we have now. In an ideal world I would have an elected assembly, as London has, but there is no hunger for this.

It was a useful meeting because here in the East we have the Strategic Health Authority asking for scrutiny, the majority of councillors and community stakeholders agreeing but a resistance somewhere in the system. We agreed today to discuss this further, whether we will get somewhere or not is another matter.

It is a start, we cannot have regional strategic plans to deal with regional issues and then have no real grip on the results. A 15 minute session at a Select Committee in the House would not be enough governance. However if we can add this to our work programme and start being able to see the issues on the ground and input into the results we see, then maybe we would be able to ensure better service delivery for the tax payer.

It is worth noting after a recent accusation that the regional assembly creates 'jobs for the boys'. This is not the case; I give my time freely and only get my mileage and childcare covered. Why not give us the job; we are doing it for free!
