Lib Dems lure Rachel Johnson for fightback against Brexit
Boris Johnson is unlikely to be over the moon...
Journalist Rachel Johnson is reportedly joining the party who her famous brother once described as “wobbling jellies of indecision”.
The sister of Boris Johnson was a member of the Conservatives until 2011, but she will now line up with the party desperate to unseat Tory Brexiteers.
Channel 4 News has even reported that Rachel Johnson has held talks with the party about standing in one of its target seats. She is said to have called former Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg “within the last few days to discuss the possibility of standing for the party in Bath… or Yeovil”.
The author and columnist has made no secret of her support for Britain remaining in the EU and wrote in the Mail on Sunday about how her children cried after the referendum result. She revealed that her 19-year-old son Oliver said of the reaction on Facebook: “They’re all saying Boris has stolen our futures."
She also said last year that her husband, Ivo Dawnay, the National Trust’s director for London, “may now be creeping towards the Lib-Dems”.
The Johnson family have always been liberal and pro-European on balance. Stanley Johnson was Conservative MEP from 1979 to 1984, while universities minister Jo Johnson was a staunch Remain campaigner. Rachel Johnson has also described her third brother, Leo, who works in ethical finance, as “sickeningly liberal”.
However, Boris Johnson has made no secret of his disdain for the party his sister is now joining.
“Lib Dems are wobbling jellies of indecision and vacillation, particularly Clegg,” he said in 2013. “His single contribution to politics has been to do a u-turn on tuition fees and make a song about it, that’s all he’s done.”
The foreign secretary is also credited with saying: “The Lib Dems are not just empty. They are a void within a vacuum surrounded by a vast inanition."
