Tory MPs transformed into fans of Nick Clegg by Jared O'Mara
Conservative MPs say Clegg is 'truly honourable' - when compared to the man who has replaced him.
During the Coalition years, Nick Clegg was famously described by Boris Johnson as a "prophylactic protection device" for David Cameron.
Even more savage was Michael Gove’s special adviser Dominic Cummings, who called the then deputy prime minister "self-obsessed, sanctimonious and so dishonest he finds the words truth and lies have ceased to have any objective meaning".
But now the behaviour of Clegg’s successor in Sheffield Hallam has prompted some Conservatives to finally find something nice to say about the former Lib Dem leader.
Jared O’Mara unseated in Clegg in June's general election, but it has gone downhill for him since then. This week he apologised and quit the Commons equalities committee over homophobic and misogynistic remarks he made online in 2002 and 2004. The comments included jokes about having an orgy with members of Girls Aloud and a suggestion it would be funny if the jazz star Jamie Cullum were “sodomised with his own piano”.
Labour then said it was investigating O’Mara following allegations that he called a constituent an "ugly bitch" in March this year.
All of which has led two Tory MPs to suggest that perhaps Clegg wasn’t that bad, all things considered.
“The truly honourable Nick Clegg versus this,” tweeted Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston in response to the news about O’Mara.
Torquay and Paignton MP Kevin Foster stated: “I disagreed with Nick Clegg, but he was a statesman, unlike this individual.”
Johnson and Cummings are yet to express the same sentiment...
